Es por todos conocido que el punto flaco de Aquiles se correspondía con el talón por el cual su madre le sujetó al sumergirlo en la laguna Estigia, cuyas aguas debían otorgarle la inmortalidad.
Cuando de niño escuchaba esa historia no entendía por qué su madre no lo sumergió del todo, o por qué no le dió otro chapuzón sujetándole del otro talón o de un brazo. Me parecía que debía de ser un poco melindrosa, y así decidí representarla en esta ilustración.
Achiles had only one vulnerable spot, the heel by which his mother held him when she dipped him in the waters of the river Styx in order to grant him the gift of immortality.
As a child, I could never understand why she would not dip him twice (once by each heel, or a combination of heels and hands). She always stroke me as somewhat finicky, and that is how I decided to picture her.

Llevo mucho tiempo sin participar en Illustration Friday, pero esta semana no he podido resistirme a hacer una ilustración sobre aquella bonita costumbre de vestir a los gemelos idénticos de idéntica manera.

El tema de esta semana en Illustration Friday me ha dado la excusa perfecta para preparar con tiempo la felicitación navideña de Acústica Global, con la que este año, además del silencio de la Navidad, celebran la mudanza a su nueva oficina.
The topic of this week at Illustration Friday give me the opportunity of designing in advance the christmas card for Acústica Global. With my design, they will celebrate not only the silence of Christmas, but the move to their new office.

Aunque sólo se trata de un boceto para La voz humana -la ópera para la cual estoy haciendo la dirección de escena- he querido participar con él en el tema de esta semana de Illustration Friday: obsesión. Pensándolo bien, ilustra doblemente el tema: estoy seguro de que en estos momentos mi obsesión con montar la ópera supera a la de ella con la llamada telefónica.
Just a sketch for La voix humaine, the opera I am stage directing now. The play illustrates the obsession theme pretty well. On second thought, I see a double obsession: hers with the phone call and, bigger still, mine with staging the play.

Cuando ilustré el invierno para Illustration Friday, me di cuenta de que podía seguir una serie a partir de la otoñal ilustración que había realizado para el tema anterior: “después”. Por ese motivo, situé a la niña de mi última ilustración en una colina llena de flores y algo más… Ahora, el tema “embotellado” me ha dado la excusa perfecta para concluir esta serie de niños y estaciones con una escena de verano.
When I drew “Winter” for Illustration Friday I realized a seasonal series could be forming, since for the previous assignment, “Afterwards”, I had used an Autumn scene. By this line of reasoning, the girl of my latest illustration was sitting on a hill in Spring (along with an unusual toy). Now “Bottled” provides a good excuse to conclude this series on children and seasons with a summer scene.

No he podido evitarlo, el último tema de Illustration Friday (remover) me ha traído inmediatamente a la cabeza un cuadro de Brueghel que vi en el Museo Kunsthistorisches de Viena durante las pasadas vacaiones. El cuadro se titula Juegos de niños y refleja multitud de divertimentos infantiles, entre los cuales no podía faltar el de remover una caca con un palo.
Naughty me. I could not help it. The last Illustration Friday topic (stir) reminded me of a painting by Brueghel that I saw at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna during the holidays. The title was “Children’s Games” and shows a wide variety of childish entertainments, like stirring poo with a stick.

No creí que llegara a tiempo de presentar una ilustración para esta semana en Illustration Friday. Sin embargo me apetecía mucho ilustrar este tema, porque el correo es algo que me ha fascinado desde niño -aún recuerdo que durante mucho tiempo quise ser cartero. Como en un cuento de Navidad, cuando casi tenía terminada la ilustración, ha salido el nuevo tema para la semana que viene: invierno, así que mi ilustración sirve igualmente.

This time I thought I wasn’t on time to submit an illustration for this week in Illustration Friday. But I really wanted to illustrate this topic, because mail is something that has fascinated me since my childhood. For a long time, I wanted to be a postman. When I was finishing my illustration on the edge, a new theme for next week has been published. It is ‘winter’, so my illustration also fit with it. As in a Christmas tale!

Esta semana, el tema en Illustration Friday es “después”. Esta es mi contribución al mismo. Me gustaría decir que, a partir de este momento, voy a participar todas las semanas, pero siempre que digo esto pasa mucho tiempo antes de que vuelva a dibujar, así que no prometo nada.
This week, the subject at Illustration Friday is “afterwards”. This is my contribution to it. I’d like to say that, from this time, I’m going to participate every week, but, when I say this, then it always passes a long time before I draw again, so I don’t promise anything.
